December 17, 2013
After an underwhelming growing season in 2012 we’ve had a fantastic 2013 in comparison. The lingering cold weather in early spring allowed the vines to stay dormant for longer and prevented the buds from breaking. Although it delayed the whole growing season it did avert any frost damage which is one of the biggest problems of growing grapes in the UK.
The unusual warm late spring and summer allowed us to catch up a little from the late start with some nice dry weather. Unfortunately we still had some problems with powdery mildew due mainly to the misty mornings. Our aim is make the best quality wine we can which starts with clean, juicy grapes so we sacrificed about 4 tonnes of grapes due to substandard quality. We could have done with some more sunshine come late Autumn for further ripening but overall it was a great harvest with double the tonnage of last year.
We’re looking forward to bringing most of the 2013 vintage wines to market next year.
