The Mount Vineyard, Shoreham

The Mount Vineyard is situated in the idyllic village of Shoreham in Kent. The Romans probably grew grapes here and the sunny microclimate of our chalk-stream valley is conducive to excellence in the grapes.

The soil is flinty and chalky with the vines on a gentle slope down to the crystal clear River Darenth. The vineyard was planted in 2004 by the Moulton family who live in the main house.

We are pleased to announce that our Bacchus 2009 won a Silver Medal at the UKVA Awards 2010 where we also won a Bronze Medal for our Pinot 2009.  This followed our successes at the SEVA Awards 2010 where our.Recession Red 2008 won a Silver Medal, both our Bacchus 2009 and our Pinot 2009 won a Bronze Medal, and our Shoreham Seyval 2008 achieved a Highly Commended. In the SEVA Awards 2009 we were awarded a Bronze Medal for our Recession Red which also won a Gold Award in the 2009 UK Vineyards Association English & Welsh Wine of the Year Competition along with the Bernard Theobald Trophy for the best outstanding red wine.

The vineyard is open a few days a year for customers and is well worth a visit (by appointment only).

The Mount Vineyard was established in 2004 with a first planting of 8,500 vines. This was increased to 13,000 vines in 2006 with a further planting of 4,500 vines in a total area of 10 acres.

The following varieties are grown:

White
Phoenix
Seyval Blanc
Bacchus
Siegerrebe

Rondo
Pinot Noir

A typical year at The Mount Vineyard

Work starts in January with pruning, then finishes in April when budding starts. As the shoots progress, they are captured in the wires, this is carried out through the growing process during the summer months. A comprehensive spray programme is in place during the summer. The vines are trimmed in late summer and some varieties are covered with nets to stop birds from eating the fruit. Harvest begins in early October, 30 tons are expected in 2010 (equating to 22,000 bottles). It is very hard work and labour intensive but the rewards are fruitful when the wine is finally ready for drinking.

Our vines are trained using a Double Guyot trellis system with one fruiting wire and six tucking wires. This enables us to have a higher canopy giving the fruit a greater chance to ripen.

“Last weekend was a lad’s walking and climbing 5 x mountains in the Brecons. That night the Recession Red was very well received. Please tell Jon that it tasted good too.
P.S. The vineyard name matched our weekend!”

“Moulton’s Recession Red caused great hilarity at a gathering on New Years Eve (and rather a lot was consumed …).”

“The wine has been a tremendous success – although I expect many of those people who have received a bottle from me as a gift may hold on to it for the amusement from its labelling, as opposed to its (very good) drinking qualities. I shall be saving a last bottle to toast the final UK GDP figures for 2009.”

“Your wine arrived this morning and we have just shared a bottle. IT’S FANTASTIC.
A really good drop of wine. And the label is just first class. So I just wanted to say well done – and thanks. It’s also a bargain – put the prices up!”
